Natto Products

As the No. 1 natto brand in Japan, Takano Foods stands out for its wide range of products. Here are my recommendations for you!

Goku Kotsubu

A long-time best-seller since the 1980s, this natto is easy to find at just about any supermarket. When I’m not sure what to choose, this is my go-to! Made with small soybeans, it’s perfect eaten with rice and comes with a classic soy-based sauce — simple and reliable.

Sugoi Natto

“Sugoi” means “amazing” or “incredible” in Japanese, and this product is marketed as a premium natto with extra health benefits. According to Takano’s website, it’s made with a special “super natto bacteria” that has 1.5 times the immune-boosting power of regular natto bacteria! It also comes with a natto sauce that contains lactic acid bacteria! Compared to their standard Goku Kotsubu natto, this natto is less sticky and has a much milder smell, making it way easier for beginners to enjoy.

Kokusan Marudaizu Natto

Small bean natto is the most common, so large bean natto like this feels a bit more special! I prefer eating them on their own rather than over rice. The included sauce is made with katsuobushi, adding an extra boost of umami! Plus, this natto is made with kokusan soybeans, meaning it’s made from locally grown soybeans. Most brands typically use non-GMO beans from the U.S. or Canada, making it even more special!

Kokusan Otsubu Natto

These beans are even larger and have a soft texture. You can really taste the natural flavor of soybeans, more so than with small bean natto.

Shichimi Natto

I’m not the best person to talk about spicy food, but this one caught my eye—I just had to try it! It comes with a shichimi paste (spice blend) along with a savory soy-based sauce. Yes, it’s spicy, but not too intense—just the right amount of kick to boost the overall flavor.

Yama Wasabi Natto

This one comes with yama wasabi. Once you try it, you might get hooked! It has a refreshing aroma and a sharp kick from Japanese horseradish.

What’s the Best Natto for You?

  • If you’re eating natto with rice, Goku Kotsubu works best.
  • If you’re looking for even more health benefits, try Sugoi Natto!
  • To enjoy the full flavor of the beans, go for large ones, Kokusan Otsubu Natto.
  • Want to mix things up? Try adding Shichimi or Yama wasabi for a spicy kick!
