  • Rice
  • A quick side dish
  • Miso soup

To save time, I usually keep frozen rice in the freezer and warm it up in the microwave. If you’d like to learn more, check out my guides on how to cook rice and how to make miso soup.

1. Classic Natto and Egg Breakfast

This is one of the most common breakfasts in our home.

Japanese breakfast with natto and fried egg.
  • Rice
  • Natto
  • Fried egg
  • Miso soup (Enoki mushrooms and scallion)

It’s a very simple but balanced meal with protein, rice, and warm soup. Natto is a staple ingredient in many Japanese homes, and it pairs perfectly with steamed rice.

2. Rice with Salmon Flakes Breakfast

This breakfast is even simpler and great for busy mornings.

Japanese breakfast with salmon flakes.
  • Rice
  • Salmon flakes
  • Furikake seasoning
  • Miso soup (Napa cabbage and egg)

Salmon flakes and furikake are very popular rice toppings in Japan. They add flavor instantly without any cooking. The miso soup is also very quick to make using napa cabbage and egg.

3. Quick Japanese Microwave Breakfast

On very busy days, I make this quick and satisfying breakfast.

Japanese breakfast with egg scrambles.
  • Rice
  • Microwave scrambled eggs with vegetables
  • Miso soup (Tofu and wakame)

The eggs are cooked in the microwave, which makes the whole meal come together very easily. Even when time is short, a warm bowl of rice and miso soup makes breakfast feel comforting and complete.
