Types of Sushi Rolls

Sushi rolls, known in Japanese as maki sushi or norimaki, are made by wrapping a sheet of nori (seaweed) around vinegared rice and fillings.

There are three main types of maki sushi:

  • Hosomaki: thin rolls with a single filling
  • Futomaki: thick rolls with multiple fillings
  • Uramaki: inside-out rolls with the rice on the outside

Ingredients for avocado sushi roll homemade.
  • Cooked Rice: Use Japanese short-grain rice for the best texture. It’s soft, slightly sticky, and holds together well for sushi. If you’re new to cooking rice, check out my guide: How to cook Japanese short-grain rice on the stove.
  • Avocado: Creamy avocado is the star of this recipe. Choose ripe avocados that are slightly soft when gently pressed.
  • Nori Seaweed Sheets: Nori is dried seaweed used to wrap sushi rolls. For this recipe, use a full-size sheet and cut it in half to make smaller, easier-to-roll sushi.
  • Rice Vinegar, Sugar, and Salt: These are used to season the rice and give sushi its signature flavor. For best results, use rice vinegar as it’s milder than other types.

Sushi Rolling Tool: Makisu (Bamboo Mat)

A makisu is a traditional bamboo mat used for rolling sushi.
It helps shape the roll and keeps the ingredients tightly packed.

Don’t have a makisu? You can use a sheet of plastic wrap as a simple substitute.

Recipe Tips

  • Handle the rice gently
When mixing the sushi rice, try not to mash the grains. Use a gentle folding motion to combine the rice and seasonings.
  • Let the rice cool
If your sushi rice is still warm, let it cool to room temperature before using.
  • Don’t overfill the roll
As a guide, use about 70–80g of rice per roll. This makes rolling much easier and helps prevent the filling from spilling out.
  • Spread the rice evenly
Take your time to spread the rice in an even layer over the nori. This helps your sushi roll look neat and hold together well.
  • Use the correct side of nori
Nori has a shiny side and a rough side. When assembling your sushi roll, place the nori with the shiny side facing down so it ends up on the outside.
