Easy Onigirazu Recipe (Tuna Mayo)

Onigirazu is a Japanese rice sandwich with rice, fillings, and nori. I’ll walk you through the different fillings and how to make onigirazu, including vegetarian and vegan options!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 canned Tuna, See other fillings at onigirazu variations
  • 1 Tbsp Mayonnaise
  • A pinch Salt
  • ½ Carrot
  • 1 cup Lettuce
  • 2 servings Cooked Rice, about 400g
  • 2 Nori Sheets

Instructions
 

  1. Prepare the Fillings: Drain the canned tuna and mix it with mayonnaise and a pinch of salt in a small bowl. Shred the carrot, microwave it for 30 seconds to soften, and add a little salt. Wash the lettuce and tear it into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Assemble the Onigirazu: Lay a sheet of plastic wrap on a flat surface. Place a nori sheet on top, shiny side down. Spread some rice in the center, shaping it into a small square. Add the filling on top. Cover it with another layer of rice.
  3. Fold the Nori: Fold the corners of the nori toward the center, wrapping the fillings into a square. Use the plastic wrap to tightly wrap the onigirazu and gently press it so it holds its shape.
  4. Slice and Serve: Let it sit for a few minutes so the nori softens and sticks. Then, cut it in half (wet it slightly to prevent sticking) and enjoy!

Notes

  • Storage: Wrap each in plastic wrap, put it in an airtight container, and refrigerate it for a few days.
